Meet Beatrix!

Anna the alpaca gave birth this morning. A wee girl, and we named her Beatrix.
She is lovely!

We have separated Anna and Beatrix into their own section of the barn and they have a couple of stalls made comfy with a layers of straw or three. Yeah, I wanted to make it extra fluffy and warm for them.

Let's Have a Contest!

Okay...here are the basics...
Remember Nina?
Yup, still preggers, no change from yesterday.
She is due on April 1st.
Here are the contest rules:
1) Predict the day and time of birth. (NONE of my does have been on time this year, btw...all were 3 days to a week and a half late!) 10 points for most accurate prediction
2) Singlet? Twins? (ALL my does have had twins this year! It looks like twins to me, but I have been wrong before!) 5 points for most accurate prediction
3) Sex of offspring (Two does, one buck/one doe, two bucks or a singlet doe or buck) 5 points for most accurate prediction

Whoever gets the most points WINS!
What will you win?
1) The right to name the new kid(s), with the caveat that the names must start with the letter "N".
2) A jar of my cajeta, lovingly packaged and sent straight to your door!

Also, in case of a tie (hey, it could happen if someone gets just the day/date right and someone else gets the number of kids and the gender correct), I will send out a jar of cajeta to each person , and I will choose the name(s) from both winners suggestions.

Entries accepted until noon tomorrow!

Our Last "Lady-In-Waiting"

One doe left to kid...
Nina, friendly to all people doe!
She is obviously getting closer...

Look at that belly!
She has bagged up a little, not a lot!
Nina is due the first week in April, so we have moved her over to the milking does pen, which also doubles as our birthing pen. Currently the pen is occupied by Lily and her twins; Liam and Lilac.
Nina had started bullying Lily during Lily's last month of pregnancy, so we put Nina in with Gabby, her twins and Champagne. In the evening, we move our milking does (currently Gabby and Champagne) into the milking doe/birthing pen.
Nina has apparently had a change of heart about bullying. She and Lily are all BFFs again and Nina has even been very gentle around Liam and Lilac.
Or maybe it is just because Nina is soooo tired...
Nina, pooped from a day of standing around, browsing and...laying around.
Yeah, poor Nina is tired and so ready to kid.

Report On Gabby the Goat

The day before yesterday, Gabby began frantically pawing the ground in her pen (the new goat palace) and bleating loudly. I went out to see her and once I was in the pen, she came up to me and leaned against me while I scratched her ears and rubbed her side. I could tell she was in labor and she just wanted some comfort.
I came back in the house and when The Girl came home from school, we heard Gabby give a particularly loud bleat, we ran out to discover she had delivered an adorable little buck. I had a towel with me, so I wiped off his wee face while his mama cleaned him up.
I  had suspected Gabby was carrying twins and as she cleaned up her new kid, I could see I was right, as the movement of the second kid was obvious. After about 15 minutes, she plopped back down and began delivering her second kid. A few pushes and a lovely fawn colored little doe was delivered! I wiped off her face as the wee thing was snorting and struggling to breathe.
Gabby got both her babies cleaned up, and within an hour, both were up and enthusiastically nursing.
I gave mama Gabby some warm water with molasses & salt (livestock Gatorade) mixed in to boost her energy and replace electrolytes.(Recipe: 2 quarts warm water, 1/2 cup molasses and 2 teaspoons salt, mix well)
I posted pictures (post below this one) and then the batteries on my camera died!
The Girl took some video and I am struggling to post that....just having a hard time uploading it to youtube, darnit.
So, video and more pics just as fast as I can get them up.
Babies and mama goat doing well. They have beautiful markings and are frisking around. Mama Gabby looks as pleased as can be with herself.
Baby goats are THE most adorable farm babies (just my opinion)!
